Affiliate marketing is something that many webmasters know how to do to some degree. They know what it’s about, and what it takes to be successful. However, if you’re new to blogging or managing a website you may be wondering how you can get into affiliate marketing to start earning an income for yourself. Fortunately, doing so is not that complicated.
I’ve created this beginners’ guide to get you started…
Summer Doldrums – A web marketer’s perspective.
I’ve been marketing online since 1995, part-time initially and now full time. That’s almost two decades during which a lot has changed.
What used to be acceptable methods of earning search engine traffic are now black hat. Search engine optimization was a term no one used back then because SE bots only read meta tags. There were no blogs, but there were newsgroups. Forums were the rage back then, and are still useful websites if you need information or help from people interested in a specific topic or issue. There was HTML and when Java first came on the scene everyone was amazed and immediately filled their websites with Java applets, usually of photos reflected in water. I thought I’d share my thoughts on once again becoming an online merchant, rather than just toiling as an affiliate marketer. I have no problem with being an affiliate marketer, but I started back in May of 1995 so it is becoming a little boring. Yes, I am that old. I want to expand my horizons more for the entertainment value than the monetary gain.
My first passion is to travel… which my web earnings support. Therefore I can not see myself rooted somewhere, opening up large shipments from manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors, repackaging them into individual shipments and sending them to customers having made purchases on my website(s). I reviewed a great book in one of my recent e-zines called “Your Brain at Work” by David Rock. As I was reviewing it again I realized how fascinating some of the research is about how your brain affects your thinking and your productivity. I just had to share some of it with you as it relates to how you manage your day. The more you know about how you’re brain is working, the more you can help it help you so you can be more productive and more successful on the job. Recently I was asked by someone if I could help him, “increase the page rank of his website to PR 1″. I replied that I should be able to do much better than just a page rank of one. In short order it became clear that he wasn’t referring to page rank at all, but SERP, which stands for search engine results page. Apparently the fellow wanted to be on page one of Google and assumed PR, or page rank, referred to which page a website link was listed on.
I’m retelling this story as a real world example of how great the lack of understanding surrounding Page Rank is. First off, the term Page Rank is rumored to be named after Larry Page, co founder of Google. I don’t know for sure if this is true or just one of many page rank myths, but I do know that myths abound. Continue reading “Dispelling Page Rank Myths” »
I have to apologize for not keeping this blog up, but I have been distracted. And the affiliate marketing tips of the day are… Becoming distracted will cost you and, virtual assistants are vital if you work alone.
My Distractions That Cost Me Money
My first distraction is that I am in the process of retiring. Retiring in itself isn’t the distraction though. It’s that I will be moving to one of three South American or Caribbean destinations to live affordably as an expatriate that is the distraction. The cost of living is the same in each of the three countries, so where I’ll call home for the rest of my life depends on which issues me permanent residence status first. So I have been organizing a one way move, while learning Spanish. Old dogs really do have a problem learning new tricks… in my case another language.
